After browsing the folder using a web browser, we verified that it contains files and subfolders. However, when accessing the same folder through the Explorer view in SharePoint, it appears empty. The mapped drive or file explorer also display a message stating that the folder is empty.
Here are the root causes and solutions for this issue:
File or folder names in the URL exceeding 128 characters
If any of the names in the URL are longer than 128 characters, it can cause this problem. Shorten the names to resolve the issue.
Full URL path exceeding 260 characters
When the combined length of the file and folder names in the URL exceeds 260 characters, it can lead to the folder appearing empty. To fix this, shorten the URL path.
Exceeding the threshold value of 5000 files in a single folder
If the total number of files in the folder exceeds the threshold limit of 5000, it can cause the folder to appear empty. Consider organizing the files into subfolders or restructuring the folder to stay within the limit.
Limited-access user permission lockdown mode feature
The problem may also be due to the "Limited-access user permission lockdown mode" feature enabled on the site collection. To resolve this, disable the feature.
By addressing these root causes and implementing the corresponding solutions, you should be able to resolve the issue of the SharePoint folder appearing empty.
